Celebrating With An Excerpt

In light of the fact that my Florida State Seminoles beat the pants off the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night, I thought we should celebrate with an excerpt from my upcoming Samhain Publishing release, Cracklin’ Rosie.

I know you’re wondering why I feel this victory is worthy of celebration more than any other victory the ‘Noles have had so far this year, but damn y’all… Do you know how LONG we ‘Noles fans have been waiting to beat Miami again? And to beat them GOOD!?!

That’s not to say that we don’t still have a long, long, long, LONG ass way to go to get back to where we have a better than great shot at beating whomever we play, but it’s a step in the right direction. So, every victory is worth some sort of celebratory fanfare.

I figure that most of you could care less about my ‘Noles winning, but for those of you that are looking forward to the release of Cracklin’ Rosie, I thought it would be a good gift from me to you! I have to say, as well, that I appreciate the way you, my friends and readers, indulge me with my college football, my NASCAR races, my coffee, my baking, my everything. And as much as I cherish my FSU wins, I cherish all of you.

So, let me find a sexy part of Rosie’s book for y’all…

Excerpt:

Dinner wasn’t cold. Not many things were worse than cold chicken and dumplings. The company on the other side of the table wasn’t cold either. The looks he sent her were nothing short of sizzling, and she couldn’t keep from squirming in her seat.

Maybe she needed to sit on her hands again.

She really shouldn’t balk at things like that with him anymore. She knew he’d win. He knew he’d win. She liked when he told her to do something for her own good, and she was getting used to it in bits and pieces.

“What are you thinking?”

“Wondering why you didn’t order dessert first.” It wasn’t what she was thinking but he didn’t need to know that.

“Liar.”

Okay so maybe he did know. He seemed to know everything she was thinking and wanting and needing at any given time, and she couldn’t figure out how he did it. “I was thinking you win.”

There. She said it. He wouldn’t drop it. He’d probe and prod and order it out of her, but at least she’d said it. Admitting it was the hard part, right? Only then can you hope to move forward.

“What do I win?”

“Whatever you want. Me.”

“Yes, I do want you. Though I wasn’t aware you thought this was a game to be won or lost.”

“I’m not sure what this is, Decker. All I know is that you win. You’re right. Always right.”

He lifted his hand to get Betsy’s attention. “It’s not about being right, Rosie.”

It didn’t help matters that the older woman was so sweet on Decker. Since he’d arrived in town, Betsy had been after her and after her to make a move on him before someone else did. Betsy didn’t know Rosie’s proclivities and at the time, Rosie hadn’t known Decker would understand them. Thankfully, she hadn’t had to really tell him about them. He’d sort of figured them out on his own.

How was she to stop herself from looking at the man’s jeans and belts when he looked so damn hot wearing them? He sure knew how to wield a belt too. Was that only this afternoon? Or rather yesterday afternoon as it was now after midnight? Still… It seemed so long ago, yet she felt it as she sat there in the booth, had felt it when he’d told her to sit on her hands. There were marks, there’d be bruises, and she’d love them. She always loved the marks after the harder spankings.

“Then what’s it about?”

“It’s about you accepting yourself and not hiding anymore. It’s about letting someone in. It’s about not having to go to Atlanta to get what you need just because you’re afraid to find it closer to home.”

“Did you ev—”

“What can I get you, darlin’?”

Betsy was pouring on the charm and honestly, Rosie couldn’t blame her. Decker might look a little rough and tumble around the edges, but… Well, he was rough and tumble, more than around the edges too. He was also a very nice man, a good man.

“Do you have any more of that cherry cobbler?”

“Actually, I have one rather large bit left. You want some ice cream on it?”

“Maybe on the side?”

“You got it.” She looked over at Rosie’s plate then back up into Rosie’s face. “Something wrong with your food?”

“What? No, I just guess I wasn’t as hungry as I thought.”

“Uh-huh. Well, no dessert for you until you eat some more of it.”

Decker laughed while Rosie sat there with her mouth hanging open. Had Betsy, the hired help, told the owner and a paying customer that she couldn’t have dessert until she finished her dinner? “I can’t believe you just said that.”

“Well, believe it.” Betsy turned on her heel and headed back to the counter where the desserts were kept.

“I guess you should eat some more. I was going to feed you some ice cream but I don’t think Betsy will let me. She’d probably yank the spoon from my hand if I tried.”

“Probably.” And with that, she picked up a piece of chicken and a dumpling loaded with gravy and ate it. The chicken was tender and the dumpling was the perfect consistency. In the diner they made the rolled dumplings and not the biscuit dumplings which she usually preferred. The customers however, loved these and she’d grown to like them.

“Did I ever what?”

“Huh?” She paused with another forkful of her dinner halfway to her mouth.

“Before Betsy came over, you started to ask did I ever. Did I ever what? What else were you going to say?”

“Oh. Did you ever stop to consider that there wasn’t anyone local for me to get involved with that would understand what I liked? I mean, it’s not like I go around town advertising it and I didn’t stop to ask anyone if they were into it either.”

“You got me there. It’s not something one would normally bring up in conversation over say, dinner. Except for me, of course.”

Rosie smiled. She couldn’t help it. “Of course.”

“But did you ever try? To find someone local?”

“No. I hadn’t.”

Decker nodded. “Not that you have to worry about it anymore.”

“Why do you say that?”

“’Cause, you’ve got me now, and I know your secrets.”

Again, Betsy chose just that moment to come by their table and drop off Decker’s order of cobbler and vanilla ice cream. Rosie had to admit it did look amazingly good.

Decker picked up the spoon and scooped some ice cream onto it and held it out to her. “Open up.”

She did so without hesitation and the vanilla bean ice cream melted on her tongue the second she closed her mouth around it. It was so sweet, so full of vanilla flavor, so rich with cream. Though overall, chocolate ice cream was her favorite, the vanilla that the diner kept on hand was the resident favorite, even for her.

Decker fed her ice cream and cobbler until the dish was empty. He used the spoon to wipe drips from her chin that she was sure he let happen on purpose. Except the last one. The last one, a mix of melted vanilla cream and cherry goodness, he leaned across the table and got with his tongue. She tensed, braced for the stares she knew were coming their way, but the second his tongue touched the dimple in her chin and licked straight up to her lips, she melted as much as the ice cream had and didn’t care about anyone else.

Her lips parted of their own accord, and her brain didn’t protest. But he didn’t take the offer. He didn’t kiss her, just sat back in his seat and lifted his hand, signaling that he was ready for the check. His gaze never left hers, and she couldn’t have looked away from him if the diner had blown up all around them. He held her captive with nothing more than his gaze and the still-wet trail left from his tongue. She wanted him. Right here, right now and she didn’t give a damn who saw it, who knew it.

The best and worst part of that…he knew exactly how she was feeling. She could see it in his stare, in the small smile on his lips, in the flush of red in his cheeks. He wanted her too and it was taking everything he had not to take her on the table. Or, maybe he’d come over to her side of the booth, lay her back and fuck her on the worn, soft vinyl.

In her mind it didn’t matter that both of them were wearing clothes. She squeezed her thighs together and as it always did, it just made the need worse. Her nipples pressed against the bra and ached, begging with every breath to be let out, to be touched, to be pinched and pulled and sucked. Betsy came by and laid the check on the table and Rosie barely managed a cursory glance in the older woman’s direction.

Decker took out his wallet. “Rosie, why don’t you go on out to the truck. I’ll be there in a minute.”

She nodded and slid out of the booth without having to be told twice. The lust was such that she felt as though she were in a trance, seeing herself walking out of the diner and climbing up into the cab of his truck. His scent surrounded her, and it only made her pussy throb and pulse. Her hands rubbed against her jeans then curled into fists. When he opened the driver’s side door and slid in behind the wheel, she turned her head and watched through hooded lashes.

“Want it?”

His voice was low, scratchy, heavy with the same raw desire that was weighing her down, tugging her under. “Yes.”

“Get those jeans ready to come down then.”

So, what’d y’all think? Okay?

I am looking forward to this release. It’ll be a busy week for me, that week, starting October 26th, what with an interview, a chat, a release party at The Romance Studio. Hope y’all will join me…

For now though, have a good Monday!

The Shifter Can Cook!

It’s been a long day. It’s 11:31am and it’s been a long day.

I went to Caribou Coffee this morning for a full-on-fat and sugar dark chocolate campfire mocha complete with whipped cream and chocolate chips and marshmallow nibs. It’s a release day ritual only, yesterday was release day and… well, it was spent taking care of some promo and taking DH to the Dr. again.

There are some that have read Arctic Shift already and there have been some amazing comments given and questions asked about more books. That makes me smile and grin and bounce off the walls. As of this writing, Arctic Shift is sitting at #2 on MBaM and that’s awesome! Of course, the book sitting at #1 is Karen Erickson’s menage, Scandalous so…

Next year when my menage comes out… Grins…

I have a lot of writing to do today to make up for none yesterday. So, I’m going to leave y’all with a recipe for Maple Grilled Salmon similar to the one Carson makes for Ruby in the old, line/supply cabin. I haven’t tried it on Salmon yet, but as the intro suggests, I have tried it on pork and it’s pretty damn good.

Maple Grilled Salmon

The sweet-sour marinade is cooked down to a syrupy glaze that’s brushed on the fish as it cooks. The citrus and maple flavors would also be tasty with pork. Garnish fillets with orange slices, if desired.

1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
3 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
4 (6-ounce) salmon fillets, skinned
Cooking spray
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1. Combine first 3 ingredients in a large zip-top plastic bag; add fish. Seal and marinate in refrigerator 3 hours.

2. Preheat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

3. Remove fish from bag, reserving the marinade. Pour marinade into a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Cook until reduced to 2 tablespoons (about 5 minutes).

4. Place fish on grill rack or pan coated with cooking spray; grill 4 minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork or until desired degree of doneness, basting occasionally with marinade. Remove fish from grill; sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Yield:  4 servings (serving size: 1 fillet)

Maple-Glazed Salmon

1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground ancho chile
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
4 (6-ounce) Alaskan salmon fillets
cooking spray
2 tablespoons maple syrup

1. Preheat broiler

2. Combine first 6 ingredients; rub spice mixture evenly over flesh side of fillets. Place fish on a broiler pan coated with cooking spray; broil 6 minutes or until desired degree of doneness. Brush fillets evenly with syrup; broil 1 minute.

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 fillet)

Both of these recipes from Cooking Light. I’m a sucker for 20-30 minute recipes! They are awesome. If I can’t make it in the crock pot, it needs to only take a max. of 30 minutes. And honestly, a lot of fresh cooking doesn’t take all that long. Neither recipe takes a long time and the food is fresh and good for you. Beats anything out of a box any day of the week. It takes a little effort but…

Carson loves to cook. It’s one of his biggest passions aside from being in the out of doors. He uses fresh ingredients and teaches Ruby the pleasures of real food. I love that. I don’t know how common or not it is for shifters to have these kinds of human traits and needs. He needs to cook. It feeds his family. Perhaps it’s part of the hunter in him. He’s strong, capable. He’s also tender, loving. He wants to care for Ruby, needs to care for her, even down to the very simple thing of feeding her good food prepared from his hands.

I could certainly get used to a Carson.

Artic Shift

Y’all have a good day! And no, I haven’t forgotten about giveaways. Just stay tuned. It’ll hit y’all before ya know it! Oh, and in case you didn’t know it yet, Arctic Shift is now available for Amazon Kindle.

This book will be released in August from Samhain Publishing. It’s my first shifter so…

I am spending a lot and I do mean A LOT of time in the writing cave this week so, when you see me out and about, it’ll be for brief periods of time while I play catch up and hopefully do a little getting ahead.

Hope you all have a great week…

Miscellaneous Mocha Monday

I don’t have anything specific to talk about today but thought it might be a good idea if I at least posted something! I don’t want y’all forgetting about me!

I was just reminded by smokinhotbooks that Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday, May 9th. Grrr… I want to hire someone to come do a complete and total cleaning of my house, from top to bottom, including windows. I don’t see that happening. $$ isn’t available for that this month. She also mentioned a massage. Damn her! I’d LOVE that too. Might even kill for it…lol. I’ve never had a massage, not a professional one, but I just know I’d love it. I just know I could become addicted to that. The $$ isn’t available this month for that either. No, this month, $$ is already spent and it’s only May 3rd. Both of my kids have birthdays this month, there are 4 NASCAR races to attend, and my daughter is going to prom.

Ah, prom. Thank goodness I don’t have a thing for scanning and uploading pics from high school onto the computer and then online.

I had definite 80’s hair for proms. I went to 4 of them. But, my daughter will likely only go to one prom during her high school years and no matter what, I would not miss the chance to see her as she walks out the door. Prom is a right of passage. It’s important. It’s one of those things that you wonder about ‘what if’. There are other events like that, but…prom is usually the first in that line of things. And whether it’s the first prom, second prom, only prom, I wouldn’t miss any of those moments. My mom is coming up to NC a week early so she can see my daughter all dressed up, to take pics, to do the whole grandma gushing thing, the whole taking pictures thing.

And though my daughter is almost 16 and believing that family is a dud and that friends are ‘all that’…well, I felt the same way, but while I’ve had some good friends throughout my life, I am glad my mom was there for me during those important, once in a lifetime moments. Family always came first to her and family comes first to me. Much as I need a vacation and a break, I would give my last dime, my last breath for my kids. I give so much of myself to my kids and home life, I give the same to my friends.

And speaking of moments, I have a book release this month. Yes, I know I had a release last week and so far, as of this writing, Sweet Caroline is sitting at #2 on MyBookstoreandMore. I’m excited about that. It’s an awesome feeling. But, I have a release coming next week, May 11th from Loose Id. Stick Shift! Hot yummy race car driver that loves winning, molasses cookies, spanking, and sexy older women. What fun we’ll all have with that one!

Fun. This article is not fun.

This one, is. I love Julia Roberts. I have for years and years and years and I think I always will.

This is fun, too! From May 2nd to May 28th, Samhain Publishing and Coffee Time Romance are presenting excerpts and prizes in what they call Spring Showers!

So, make sure you come over, visit, talk to the authors, comment on the excerpts, and maybe even win!

I don’t really have much else today. I need to spend some time writing today and after lunch here, I think I’ll be getting right on that.

I hope all of you have a wonderful week.

Sweet Caroline…and Lissa’s Draft winners…

As all of you know, and if you don’t, you need to come out of hiding more often, today is the release of my newest title from Samhain Publishing, Sweet Caroline!

I am so excited. I truly love this story, this couple, this damn HOT cover!

I’m sure most of you have heard somewhere that I got the idea from an episode of Glee and you heard right. I also sat for hours upon hours listening to Neil Diamond sing it on my mp3 player as I wrote the book.

For those that have bought the book, thank you. I hope you really enjoy it. For those that haven’t, well…

If you haven’t watched Glee, I thought I’d share the Sweet Caroline clip here on the blog.

And here’s a little Elvis action…

Of course, we have have a little Neil Diamond, for without whom we wouldn’t have this song and well, might not have this book…

I told y’all the other day that I’d be picking some people at random in a sort of modified draft since I was watching the oddest, and in some ways worst NFL draft recent years. The second, third, and so on rounds made much more sense than the first. Anyway, I have picked my draftee’s and they will be receiving an email from me shortly.

Those names are:

Bianca_Riot
Shetlands Pixie
Chloe Waits
and
Danyel McDaniel

I hope all of you have had a great Tuesday and I’ll see you on the flipside!
