The birthday I remember with the most affection came when I turned twelve. We’d lost our family pet, a sweet, elderly dachshund named Susie, a few months earlier. It was a sad time for all of us, especially my parents – they’d had Susie since before I was born. After that, my mother put her foot down and said no more pets for awhile. She just couldn’t handle losing another one.

Then my grandmother’s cat had kittens, and they were six of the most adorable balls of fluff I’d ever seen. I wanted one so badly, but Mom said no. But grandmothers have a way of getting what they want. So when Gram showed up at my birthday party cradling one of the kittens in her arms, Mom gave her a stern look, then turned to me and said, “Fine, you can have it. But you have to clean its box every day and feed it!”

All of which I did gladly. Since that day, I’ve been a confirmed cat person. In fact, there’s a little black-and-white fellow named Timothy warming my feet right now. 🙂
