I’m Still A Race Fan…

… Though you’d probably never know because I haven’t talked about it in, well, all of last season and my driver won it all. He’s the current Nascar champion.

I didn’t even watch most of the Nascar races last season.

Why not? Why did I end up taking a nap during most of the races I did watch? Because it’s become…tame. And boring. The leader would get out in front of the pack and runaway more often than not. The rivalry’s that the sport used to have are gone. The tension between drivers is just… Boring. Even when my driver won. Still. I found it boring and lacking any sort of real excitement. I mean, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch have grown up and put their issues to bed and it’s been years since we’ve seen a good Kevin Harvick hood walking, jump and land a punch fight because tensions were high and there were wins on the line. Now… it’s just… It’s money driven. Keep the car clean. Keep the sponsors happy. Tow the line.

I’d rather see the knock-down, see the fire, see the spark. But, that’s just me.

I also haven’t been to a race in a couple of years. I didn’t want to pay that much money to people watch when I could go almost anywhere else within a 50 mile radius to find people doing stupid shit. Maybe not belly flopping in the mud after guzzling beer stupid, but ya know, sacrifices.

That’ll change this upcoming season, though. My son’s favorite driver since, oh… ’95, is retiring. Jimmie Johnson. So, we’ll be taking the 7 minute drive to Charlotte Motor Speedway a couple times to see him race in his final season.

The race watching has already begun in our house: Supercross began a couple weeks ago. And the Rolex 24 is this upcoming weekend from Saturday at 1:30pm until Sunday at 1:40pm. I plan to camp out in the living room, get TrackPass from NBC Sports Gold, and indulge. And bonus… Kyle Busch will be taking part in his first Rolex 24 in car #14, GT Daytona.

Plus, I stressed myself so much over the last few years with writing, or the lack thereof, that I didn’t take time for things I enjoyed (I didn’t even watch half the college football that I usually watch). I spun my wheels, did absolute shit to achieve any sort of meaningful progress for all my talk of mindset shifts and insights and whatever… None of it meant anything because I didn’t make any of the changes that needed to be made. I paid lip service, acknowledged some wrongdoing, wrong ways of thinking, but didn’t do the conscious work and it is work, very hard work, beyond journaling, to get through the internal bullshit and make real moves forward into a different mental and emotional place.

This year, though… 2020? Yeah, I’ve started actually doing the work. And it’s included taking some time away from the desk, to do things that make me happy. It’s mostly been reading, but I’m branching out to include other things… This topic is a post for another day, though. For now, just know, I’m taking time to smell the proverbial roses, and that includes bright, shiny cars with high powered engines.

You can take the girl away from Nascar, but you can’t take Nascar away from the girl…or something like that. That was bad, I know. Go on and roll your eyes. I did.

And yes, all this racing inspires other things that I’ll talk to you about at a later date, things like words…

2016-2017 College Football Bowl Games, Day 12

Well…

AutoZone Liberty Bowl, Georgia vs TCU (A Win! Thank goodness ’cause for a while, it didn’t look so good for me, but definitely ended well!)

Hyundai Sun Bowl, North Carolina vs Stanford (Not a win. A total bust. And let me just say, a ref that causes the ball to come out of the player’s hand, however inadvertent? Really? Not cool!)

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl, Air Force vs South Alabama (Win!)

Music City Bowl, Nebraska vs Tennessee (Not so much!)

Capitol One Orange Bowl, Michigan vs Florida State (This was the Granddaddy of them all for ME! We came out hot and strong and looked as though we were going to runaway with it… Then? Well, then we came out of halftime acting like we didn’t want to win it after all. WTH?!? Michigan made the adjustments, FSU just held on. And it came down to the very end. The. Very. End! We tried to lose it, but were able to pull it out and when it’s all said and done, that’s the only thing that matters.)

The playoffs start today… So, let’s go…

2016-2017 College Football Bowl Games, Days 10 & 11

I can’t say the last two days have gone too much better in regards to my record. I can’t say the record is improving, but I have won some key match-ups in my household and that goes a long way to restoring my confidence. Here’s hoping it won’t be all that short lived…

Day 10:

New Era Pinstripe Bowl, Northwestern vs Pittsburgh (I didn’t start out the day well…at all. This was a loss. Sadly.)

Russell Athletic Bowl, Miami (FL) vs West Virginia (I got one!)

Foster Farms Bowl, Indiana vs Utah (And I got another one! Two game streak…)

AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl, Kansas State vs Texas A&M (I know better than to go against Desmond Howard and Bill Snyder…sighs. Lost this one.)

Day 11:

Birmingham Bowl, USF vs South Carolina (C’mon Man!)

Belk Bowl, Virginia Tech vs Arkansas (This one started out UGLY for V. Tech. but turned out awesome in the end for both of us! Yay! A win for me!)

Valero Alamo Bowl, Oklahoma State vs Colorado (Another two game streak for me! And let me just say, as ugly as the Virginia Tech game was in the first half, yet ended well… This game started out ugly for Colorado and just got uglier as the night went on. I felt awful for them… Blowouts are never fun when you have nothing against the team and you’re just looking for a good game.)

Day 12 is going to be either great or not. My Florida State Seminoles play tonight, so… There’s a slight possibility you won’t see a post from me tomorrow, depending on how the game goes. All I can say is…

And hope for a second half that kicks ass! Go! Noles!

2016-2017 College Football Bowl Games, Days 8 & 9

And… My losing streak has NOT improved. Unless you count continuing to lose a good thing, then by all means…

St. Petersburg Bowl – Miami (Oh) vs Mississippi State (Yay! A win!)

Quick Lane Bowl – Boston College vs Maryland (Yay! Another win… Can it continue? Can I get 3 in a row?)

Camping World Independence Bowl – NC State vs Vanderbilt (No. No it cannot continue and no I didn’t get 3 wins in a row…)

Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl – Army vs North Texas (Oh but wait… Here’s a win!)

Military Bowl – Temple vs Wake Forest (And here’s a loss… Followed, by 2 more. So while I can’t seem to put 3 wins together, I can do a very good job at putting 3 losses together. This is hell on my ego. I used to be good at this. No, wrong. I used to be GREAT at this! But man oh man…!)

Holiday Bowl – Washington State vs Minnesota

Cactus Bowl – Baylor vs Boise State

Today is a new day with 4 more bowl games… Let’s see if I can break this awful, awful stance of win followed by multiple losses…

I am still persevering though. I am still pushing through and holding out hope I can turn this thing around!
