For those of you new to me, my name is Lissa Matthews. I write contemporary romance, but have dabbled in paranormal romance and later this year, I will be doing a lot more paranormal romance. I’m a slow adapter, I’ll admit it, but I’m finding myself falling in love with reading and writing shifters lately. So, I’m writing more of them.
I love of reading them is wolves or big cats. I have written bears, and am writing a wolf, a bobcat, another bear, and a reindeer. Apparently, I can’t pick just one animal to focus on.
Fun Facts From National Geographic:
Black Bears: “Black bears spend the winter dormant in their dens, feeding on body fat they have built up by eating ravenously all summer and fall. They make dens in caves, burrows, brush piles, or other sheltered spots—sometimes even in tree holes high above the ground. Black bears hibernate for various lengths of time, governed by the diverse climates in which they live, from Canada to northern Mexico.”
Polar Bears: “Polar bears live in one of the planet’s coldest environments and depend on a thick coat of insulated fur, which covers a warming layer of fat. Fur even grows on the bottom of their paws, which protects against cold surfaces and provides a good grip on ice. The bear’s stark white coat provides camouflage in surrounding snow and ice. But under their fur, polar bears have black skin—the better to soak in the sun’s warming rays.”
Wolves: “Wolves are legendary because of their spine-tingling howl, which they use to communicate. A lone wolf howls to attract the attention of his pack, while communal howls may send territorial messages from one pack to another. Some howls are confrontational. Much like barking domestic dogs, wolves may simply begin howling because a nearby wolf has already begun.”
Bobcat: “Fierce hunters, bobcats can kill prey much bigger than themselves, but usually eat rabbits, birds, mice, squirrels, and other smaller game. The bobcat hunts by stealth, but delivers a deathblow with a leaping pounce that can cover 10 feet (3 meters).”
Caribou (Also known as Reindeer): “As summer approaches, caribou herds head north in one of the world’s great large-animal migrations. They may travel more than 600 miles (965 kilometers) along well trod annual routes. At the end of their journey, they spend the summer feeding on the abundant grasses and plants of the tundra. In these rich grounds, an adult caribou can eat 12 pounds (5 kilograms) of food each day.”
I love animals and learning about them is fascinating, molding the animal with the human, figuring out how they co-exist is something I get really excited about when writing.
For my part of the Howling Good Hop, I am giving away a copy of my latest shifter release, Shifting Currents and a $10 gift card to the e-tailer of your choice. It’s the perfect summer read…
Blake doesn’t want a mate. No way. No how. And he certainly doesn’t want her camping on his land, floating down his stretch of river, or looking like she belongs in his bed.
But that’s exactly what he gets when he happens upon a curvy woman with shades of sunset hair named Leah.
She’s on vacation and isn’t looking for any complications, especially in the form of a shifter or the possessive MINE signal he gives off.
So, what are two bears to do when they’ve convinced themselves they don’t want, much less need anyone else? They give in to the pull and mate, of course, but in sex only. No life commitment. No cubs. No changing the way they live: Separate and independent of each other.
Except when she leaves his mountain, Blake can’t get her off his mind and Leah can’t stop craving his particular brand of gruffness. Now, the one thing neither wanted, has come full circle, and is ready to bite them both.
What was the first shifter romance you read? And what shifter type is your favorite? Comment below to win a copy of Shifting Currents and a $10 gift card to the e-tailer of your choice!
