I went to the dentist today. It is now 3:00pm in the afternoon on the East Coast. It has been 5 hours since I left the dentist’s office and the novocaine is finally starting to wear off. Now, they say, ‘take some ibuprofen before the numbness wears off for the pain that you’ll feel’. That’s all well and good but I couldn’t take it before because well, I was numb. NUMB. Cannot feel. End up with water all down my front. Take a pill? Sure. Let me choke on it!
And guess what? I have to do this 3 more times in the next month and a half. Yay!
The pain is showing up as they said. Lucky me. I’m also starving. Let me say that again. STARVING!
When I left the dentist’s office this morning, this is how I felt:
I’m going back to lay down.

Aww,Lissa, I am so sorry you have to go through that! I have
such a fear of dentist. I have had a couple of root canals
over the years, but the last one has scared me for life! I
felt every bit of the last one I had. For some reason, no
matter how much Novocaine was injected, it was still felt. He
said it’s a hot root or something, he had to put novocaine into
the root, drill and repeat for 2 and a half hours. I shook and
sobbed with tears in my ears the whole damn time. Now, there is
a tooth that most likely needs a root canal, but he wont know
until they start on the tooth. I have been putting it off. I
would come hold your hand, if I could. I hate, hate, hate going
to the dentist. But, I make my kids go every 6 months.Take care
So sorry you are feeling lousy. Make yourself a yummy smoothie – it will help numb your mouth and make you less hungry.
Feel better!
I’m so sorry you had to go through that. For whatever reasion (a friend says it’s my Janeen –
Irish heritage) it’s very difficult to get my nerves numb.
While I’m not scared of him at all, the pain is so bad to shoot the novacaine in they have to give me gas to sit still. After usually three times the normal amount of novocaine I finally get numbed up and then we all relax til he’s done. I don’t know if gas may help you, but you have alternatives. They can use gas or put you under sedation, talk to your dentist prior to your appointment about your options so you don’t have to suffer so much.

I’d ask your dentist or your physician about a liquid form or meltaway tab of the ibuprofin or see if aleve would be helpful. Aleve lasts longer and you could take it before he numbs you up.
Hope the rest of your procedures go better.
