For my part of the hop, I’ll be giving away a $25 gift card to an e-tailer of your choice (books, lingerie, naughty toys, etc…) and ebook copies of The Cupcake Cowboy, Love and Tattoos, Melting Jane, and my new release Slide Down On Me! Talk about a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

Leave a comment below, answering the following the question… What was the least romantic Valentine’s gift you’ve ever received (if you normally receive anything)?

I hope you’ll have a fun and enter all the giveaways!

It’s the day after Thanksgiving…

…And people are or have been out shopping. Gravitating toward the best sales EVER! The stores open earlier, the crowds are larger, the discounts deeper… And yet, I stay at home. I like a deal just like everyone else, but I’ve worked retails and restaurant and service on holidays, I’ve been away from my family, and I’ve worked the day after holidays… Once you’ve done that, something about flocking to the stores loses some of it’s luster.

I wasn’t always such a bah-humbug about it. I loved going to the stores the day after Thanksgiving as a kid. I didn’t know what it meant for those working though… Yes, I’ll pay more. Yes, my visit to the store isn’t going to make a difference one way or the other to anyone working or not. It’s just my personal preference.

There are online deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This Saturday is also Small Business Saturday… I’ll take part in all that. I am, afterall, a small business myself and as such, I’ve dropped the prices on my self-published titles to $0.99 through Monday at midnight, including my new releases Love and Tattoos and The Cupcake Cowboy. If you haven’t read these or tried some of my others, now’s your chance!

At All Romance eBooks, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon, the following titles are newly marked down for the holiday shopping weekend…

Do you shop small, local businesses? They can be more expensive than chain stores, I agree. I love the feel of them though, the personal touch, and the uniqueness of their stock. Of course, it’s also Rivalry Weekend in college football so any shopping I do will be done before noon! Priorities people! I’ll also do several handmade and food gifts. I love baking for people. What bugs me is that people look down their noses at it as being cheap, but when you really think about it, it’s not cheap at all. If you’ve gone to the grocery store to shop for anything, you know food isn’t cheap. It’s more difficult nowadays, yes with so many on different eating plans and diets and so many allergies. But even then, the possibilities are endless.

I like small and thoughtful, something that means something. Of course, there are always those who are difficult to make and shop for. Those who have everything, or buy everything all through the year, or who change completely and you don’t know them anymore or what they like… People talk about gift cards being impersonal, but c’mon now… Who honestly doesn’t love a gift card to their favorite stores? I know I do!

So, while you’re shopping, pick up my books that are on sale, gift them to someone, or to yourself… I’ve gifted books a ton and I know people who love to read, always love that!

For me, I’m going to refill my coffee and head into writing. The Sticky Cowgirl comes out in January!

Snippet Saturday – Smooth Operator

snippetsaturday

Smooth operators. We’ve all known them, right? They deliver smooth lines, quick with compliments, and in general give you the willies. They make your spine feel as though a snake is slithering and you can’t wait to get away.

The Sade song, Smooth Operator, comes to mind when you see the words. At least for me it did.

But, maybe there’s another kind. The one who means the lines, who means the compliments, who doesn’t give you the willies, but instead works his way under your skin before you even know what’s hit you. He can be the good one, the fun one, the right one…

Of course, what about the smooth friend? The one who tricks you without you even realizing what he’s up to and all for your own good…

MeltingJane600x900

“He drove all the way into the city, and he left just like that?” Edward questioned. He drained the rest of his latte and carefully wiped his mouth. Jane wanted to slug him for always being neat and tidy and so put together when half the time, she was less than all that.

“Yep.” What the hell was up with that? All because she told him to go? He didn’t have to give up so easily.

She really was better off that he did go, she knew that. There were just too many complications that came with being involved with a man like him. Life would be simpler without the want, the lust, the sheer hunger to crawl naked all over him.

If he had stayed, would she have given in? Of course she would have. She huffed out a frustrated sigh. She needed to shed the leftover shit from her relationship with Phillip. More than anything, reminders lingering in the house weren’t helping her move on. What was that thing about writing a letter and then burning it being somehow cathartic? Would the same hold true if she burned all the stuff he’d left at her door? Most of it was what she’d given him as gifts, so perhaps that would count as sort of her “letter.”

Indecision gnawed at her. Might be worth a shot. She didn’t want to hold on to someone that had walked away without a backward glance. She didn’t want to hold on to someone she had proved to herself she could live without, even if she had done so while consuming untold pounds of chocolate.

“Hey.” Edward snapped his fingers in front of her face. She blinked and focused on him.

“What?”

“Where’d you go? I was talking to you and you zoned out on me.”

“I’m tired,” she lied. “You know I don’t get up until the sun is high overhead.”

“Time to get over that. C’mon, finish up.”

“It’s illegal to be this perky this early.” Jane lowered her head to the table. “I don’t want to go shopping.”

“Liar.”

“Am not,” she whined. “You said we were going out for breakfast and coffee.”

“And we did. Now, I want to go shopping and don’t want to go alone, so you’re going with me.”

“What about your date from last night. Why not call him to go with you?”

“Because he’s the reason I’m going shopping.”

Edward usually didn’t need a reason to add to his wardrobe, but this was kind of interesting. “Are you ever going to tell me about this guy?”

“Are you ever going to stop moping around the apartment?”

Oh that was low. He was right, but still a low blow. “I’m not moping at the apartment right now.”

“No, you’re moping in this lovely little café.”

“I wouldn’t have to if you hadn’t promised me espresso drinks and pastries I don’t have to make.”

“I’m a sneaky bitch.” Edward winked at her and Jane couldn’t stop the laugh that bubbled up but she did her best to cover it up with a sip of espresso. Straight, unsweetened, smooth, rich espresso. If that didn’t wake her up, nothing would.

“That you are.” She took a big gulp of air and let it out in a huff. “Two stores. No more and if you don’t find what you’re looking for, tough.”

“Four stores and I’ll buy you lunch.”

“Three stores and you buy me lunch anyway.”

“Deal. And you have to try on this hot little black dress I saw yesterday.”

“No deal on that. I don’t need a little black dress, hot or not. I don’t want any new clothes. You can’t tempt me with them.”

“Again with the lies.” Edward shook his head. “Jane honey, you do need that dress and you do need new clothes.”

“Can we just go and get this over with? I want to get back to my sweat suit before it thinks I don’t love it anymore.”

“I’m going to burn it when we get back.”

Jane got up and set the pretty cup and dessert sized plate on the counter. “You’ll do no such thing.

“You’re right. I won’t. At least not the gray one. That one I tossed it in with the trash this morning when we left,” Edward said in his sing-song voice as he pushed the door open and walked outside. Jane was speechless. Momentarily so before she went chasing after him.

“You did what?” she asked, out of breath from jogging to catch up.

“I stuffed it in the trash bag while you were in the shower.” Edward paused outside his favorite kitchen store. “Do you want to go in? We could use a few more silicone spatulas.”

“Don’t change the subject. Why would you throw out my sweat suit?” Edward pushed open the door to the store and disappeared inside. He kept walking away. Did he think she wouldn’t kick him in the shin if they were in a crowded place? “And stop trying to get away from me,” she hissed.

“I’m not trying to get away from you. We need spatulas.”

“Oh you are so full of it. We have a whole drawer full of spatulas.”

“But I like these.” He pulled a wood handled silicone spoon out of a canister sitting on a small mosaic garden table. It was white with orange dots and Jane had to admit they were fun and that she would love to have a few of them in a variety of dot colors, but right at that moment…

She ground her jaw together and forced words through barely moving lips. “What are you up to, Edward?”

“I’m up to seeing you come out of hiding, Jane. I’m up to seeing you get over this depression.”

“I’m not depressed and I’m not hiding.”

“Oh?” He looked at her. “Then what would you call it?”

What did she call it? “Minding my own business,” she offered. “Something you should maybe think about.”

“Nice try.” Edward pulled three more spoons from the canister. One with green dots, one with blue dots, and one with yellow dots. “Do you want the red one, as well? We could have a complete set.” Jane flipped her hair and turned her back. She didn’t want to talk to him anymore. “Pouting won’t get you anywhere, but fine, I’ll get the red one, too.”

“While you’re being generous, I need a new cookie scoop too.” She walked around the end of the row to the next row over. In another canister, this time on the shelf of a book case, Jane picked up two different sized cookie scoops. One with a purple squeeze handle and one with a pink squeeze handle. She really didn’t need new cookie scoops for the truffles, but she and Edward were a lot alike when it came to kitchen stores. She found it impossible to resist them. Before candy making, she’d never really cared for cooking or baking, but she’d learned a lot by  devoting and dedicating herself to her craft. The success of their boutique business, dreamed up over a box of candy and a good bottle of wine, was proof of that.

Which, now that she thought about it, Phillip–

“Do you want to look for anything else?” Edward nudged.

Jane shook herself from the puzzle pieces that still didn’t fit from her break-up with Phillip and turned her gaze to Edward. “No, I’m good.” She handed the scoops over and Edward fairly skipped to the counter and the sweet man manning the register. To see the two men flirting, she had to smile. Edward was really the sweetest, most adorable man she could have ever hoped to fall into lifelong friendship with.

She was still pissed at him though.

Do you have friends like Edward? I think we all should have at least one…

Snippet Saturday – City As A Setting

snippetsaturdayI’m late! I’m so sorry. Ever since I walked away from social media this morning, I’ve been embroiled in the drama of housework and laundry.

I found a few minutes though so, here I am, finally doing my snippet.

City as a setting. I have several different cities in my books, but I’m having to think a lot about this theme. I don’t use cities very much and there’s not as much that happens outside as inside in my stories, but the one that sticks out most for me at this moment is Melting Jane. Jane and her best friend/business partner Edward, share loft space in downtown Denver. The urban setting makes impromptu morning shopping easy and accessible and for Jane, this isn’t always a good thing where Edward is concerned…

MeltingJane600x900Snippet 1:

“He drove all the way into the city, and he left just like that?” Edward questioned. He drained the rest of his latte and carefully wiped his mouth. Jane wanted to slug him for always being neat and tidy and so put together when half the time, she was less than all that.

“Yep.” What the hell was up with that? All because she told him to go? He didn’t have to give up so easily.

“I’m not trying to get away from you. We need spatulas.”

Snippet 2:

“Will that be all?” the clerk asked her. Jane was quick to hand the dress over and nodded.

“Yes.”

“No.”

“No?”

“No, we’ll take these, too.” Edward placed a knee high pair of black boots on the counter. They were beautiful, elegant. Lace up the front, a short curved heel. She loved them immediately.

“Edward, really,” she whispered heatedly, ignoring the curious glance from the young woman behind the counter.

“These will be all.”

“Wonderful.”

Jane knew when she was beat. She walked away, all the way out the door, letting Edward do what he did best. Have his way.

The air was crisp, cold, tolerable. She liked the dry air, was happy there was no wind and that it wasn’t snowing. “Well, this has been a huge success.”

Jane turned to Edward as he joined her on the sidewalk. “What has?”

“Shopping.”

“Ah yes.” She started walking. “Where are your purchases for your man?”

“Oh I got them the other day.”

“Meaning this was all a ploy again, a set up.”

“I didn’t set you up with anyone other than me. I thought a morning out would be a nice change.”

“I don’t like that you’ve taken to lying to me.”

“If you liked the truth, I wouldn’t have to. Do you want to see him again?”

“Yes.”

“I have his number.”

“No, thanks. I said I want to, not that I’m going to. It’s pointless.”

“I don’t think so.”

“I love your optimism.” They walked in silence for a couple of blocks. The sun reflected off the glass of the high rise office buildings and coffee shops along the streets were full of customers. There was energy on the streets of Denver in the mornings, really at all hours of the day and sometimes into the nights. “I’ve missed this,” she admitted, when they stopped at a corner waiting for the street crossing signal.

“I know. You’re not meant to be holed up inside for months at a time like you have been.”

“No. I’m not. I like getting out. I like being around people.”

“You just needed a push.”

“More like a kidnapping.”

“I didn’t kidnap you, but the thought did cross my mind once or twice.” They reached for one anothers hands at the same time, clasping fingers tightly.

“I get it. I’ll try to get out more.”

“With Graham?”

“I doubt I’ll be hearing from him again. I threw him out last night.”

“He doesn’t strike me as the kind of man who gives up all that easily.”

“Maybe not, but I’m sure he isn’t used to having a door slammed in his face.”

“True. Let’s hope he surprises you and comes back.”

“You know I don’t like surprises.”

Edward laughed and opened the door to their building, ushering her inside. “I know, but he doesn’t.”

Snippet Saturday – Author’s Choice

Author’s Choice. I always love and hate this one. Choosing is always difficult…

But, I think in the spirit of the season and winter and cold (in some places), we’ll go with something that lends itself to a little warming up…

Snippet:

Jane walked away from the large window in the kitchen that overlooked downtown. Edward was out with his mystery man and Jane couldn’t wait to find out who it was. She had a feeling she knew the man, but Edward hadn’t talked about anyone in recent weeks. Not that she would have been paying much attention. It wasn’t until he arranged the set up with Graham that she’d started coming out of her fog.

“Right,” she whispered to herself. With a nervous but determined stride, she went into her bedroom.

The closets in the loft were huge, walk-in style that more than one person at a time could occupy. It was one of the reasons she and Edward had bought it. He had more clothes and shoes than any woman she knew, and he used every inch of his closet, part of hers, and part of the one they used for storage.

She pulled out the box from the back corner of her closet before she could change her mind. It was time to get over it with and move on. There were days she forgot it was stashed in the back corner and there were other days when it tormented the crap out of her. And score another point for Edward. Dumping Cowboy Surfer into her lap, while deceptive, was very motivating.

Her relationship with Phillip had been the first long-term one she’d had since college. She had to admit that though it hadn’t been all warm and fuzzy, there’d been a certain pleasantness that had worked for them. She didn’t know she needed passion and heat, didn’t know anything had been missing on her side. Now that she’d met Cowboy Surfer, she wanted to explore all those things his kiss brought to life. She wanted more of those tingles, more of those ripples through the deepest part of her.

His kiss had been brief — just a touch of his lips to hers — but the shot of heat between her legs and the triple-time thumping of her heart in her chest had been enough to send her running. She hadn’t been able to shake it, either on the drive home or in the time since she’d arrived home. And him showing up…well, that just added sexual fuel to a fire she wasn’t quite sure what to do with or how to put out.

Right now though, the box and its contents had to go. She hadn’t opened it since the day Phillip had left it at her door, and she was ready to purge Phillip and the memories of him, her humiliation at his electronic dumping, everything associated with their relationship.

So, what was she supposed to do with it? There wasn’t a fireplace for her to burn it all. There was the Dumpster behind the building she could toss it in. Would that be healing enough? In a poetic kind of way perhaps. Tossing away the material of their relationship as he’d tossed her away. Yes, that might work. Had he really tossed her away, though, or had he simply moved on to something that might work better for him? And why was she suddenly questioning everything?

She’d have to walk across the alley and…on second thought, no. She wasn’t fond of the alley in the daytime, so no way was she going out there in the dark. What was she going to do? Put it back in the closet?

An image of Graham popped into her head, the heat from his body, the scent of him, the look in his eyes when he’d lifted his head from kissing her… “Oh hell no, the box has to go.”

Her only other option was the roof. She and Edward had a patio set and one of those small outdoor fire pits, but she’d never used it on her own. Did they have any firewood? Or was the thing gas powered? Damn, she didn’t know. She set the box on a barstool. In the kitchen, she started rummaging through the junk drawer looking for the instruction manual for the fire pit. Could she put the stuff in it without burning the whole building down?

The knock on the door caught her off guard and without thinking, she opened it. “Graham. What are you doing here again?”

“I brought dinner.” To prove the truth of his statement, he held up the pizza box he held in one hand. In his other hand he held a soda bottle.

The scents of cheese and tomato sauce wafted through the open doorway. Dammit. Jane hung her head and shook it, but quickly looked up again. “I don’t suppose you’ll take no for an answer again, huh?”

“Nope.” He walked in when she stepped back. She was defeated and she knew it. Edward had her number and it appeared he’d shared that inside information with Graham.

She shut the door. “I did make it clear though that I’m not dating.”

“You did, but I don’t think I believe you. Not completely, at least.”

“Not completely?”

“Nope. You might not be dating anyone else, but I think you want to date me.”

“Oh the ego.” Graham grinned, megawatt, and set the pizza box on the counter.

“Why are you insisting on having dinner?”

“You need to eat.”

“Well, I’m busy and don’t have time,” She grumbled and went back to rifling through the drawer she’d been in previously, hoping he’d get the hint if she ignored him. Looking anywhere, including in a drawer, was better than looking at him. The damn man was right, at least in the wanting him sense. Dating, though, had nothing to do with what she wanted to do with him.

Not yet anyway.

Where had Edward put the damn instructions? Could they be on the roof in the storage bench with all their outdoor eating supplies? It would be logical, much more so than them being stuck here in the kitchen. She slammed the drawer shut after she put everything back in then counted to a hundred. She didn’t want to face Graham again yet and the truth of how much she did in fact want him. She didn’t trust herself around him. Her heavily fortified defenses weren’t so strong when she was around him. Infatuation at first sight was new to her and she hadn’t had time to process it.

When she finally did turn toward him, he’d taken his coat off and laid it over the end of the counter. He still wore a dark blue sweater, and another pair of jeans that hugged his hips and thighs. Then there were the boots… Oh God. He was impeccable, stylish, and she, wasn’t. Oh God.

“Ready to eat, or talk, or…?”

Jane lifted an eyebrow. “Or?”

“Mmm hmmm. Or.”

Yeah, no. She so didn’t need to know what he meant by “or.” Maybe she could bore the shit out of him during dinner so he’d leave and she could dispose of the box o’crap in peace. But, if she did that, what were the chances he’d want to see her again? Which was the whole point; purging the past so she could have a fucking fantastic present with the Cowboy Surfer standing just over there looking smug and hot and more yummy than the pizza smelled.

“What are you looking for? Can I help?”

“Nothing and no.”

She pulled a couple of plates from the cabinet beside the fridge and snagged clean glasses from the dish drain. “So, Graham, what do you do? For a living, that is.”

He took the glasses from her and laughed. Again. Though this time she was sure it wasn’t at her. That was progress and a good thing. What wasn’t a good thing was the thought she could listen to him laugh all day and night and never tire of it. It was rich and deep, matching the rest of him.

She watched him in her kitchen. He dwarfed everything, including her. He was so tall compared to her five feet four and if he stood in the middle of the small space, he could probably touch each surface without having to move. He depressed the button on the ice maker, filling the glasses with ice cubes. She should tell him she preferred crushed just to irritate him.

He turned toward her and put the glasses on the counter, then opened the bottle of soda he’d brought as well. “I write articles for travel magazines and other publications.”

Well, she’d have never pegged him as the writing sort. He looked like he belonged on horseback, on a motorcycle, or on a surfboard, but not behind a desk writing articles. “Travel writing, huh? That’s got to be interesting.”

“It is.” He set her glass up on the bar and opened the box of pizza. “I get to try a lot of new things and see a lot of new places. It keeps life fresh. I’ll have to bring you with me sometime.”

Oh, he didn’t need to say something like that. She’d love to go with him, anywhere, everywhere, so long as there was a bed and a naked him. Funny things were going on inside her and between her legs, yet all he did was put pizza on two plates, and talk to her. She picked up one of the plates and glasses. “I think you need to leave right after dinner.” Before I tackle you to the floor, have my way with you, and believe every word out of your beautiful mouth.

When she walked around to the other side of the counter, her eyes lit on the box. Oh shit. The frustrating man had made her forget all about it. She didn’t want to call attention to it and she didn’t want him asking her about it, not that she thought he’d care, but still… Setting her food and drink on the bar, she reached for the box and dumped it haphazardly into her purple chair.

He slid onto a barstool. “No, you don’t.”

“Yes. Yes, I do.”

Taking a bite of his pizza, he winked at her. The insufferable man winked at her. What the hell? She wasn’t going to be able to resist him if he kept acting all hot and sexy and interested. And that’s all it was, right, just an act? Right.

But if that was so, then why had he come back?

She glared at him as he ate, seemingly unconcerned with their little disagreement, unlike her who was completely obsessed with it. When he reached for another slice, she watched the movement of his hand, his long, tan fingers, and the way they gripped the crust to pull the piece away from the rest of the pie. What would it feel like to have those fingers pull on her nipples, wrap themselves in her hair and tug, dig deep between her legs?

She mentally shook herself. He had her all twisted up inside and wanting things she’d never really cared about wanting before.

Sex was just sex.

“Not going to eat?” He nodded toward the untouched food in front of her.

She had to admit the pizza smelled heavenly and man, did she love ooey-gooey pepperoni and extra cheese pizza. She could have dinner with him and then she would usher him out the door. No harm, no foul.

She’d never eaten so fast in her life. She had a cursory taste of the cheese and the sauce, the pepperoni which had a slight spicy kick to it, and the crunchy but chewy crust. She gulped down her drink, too. “Done. Are you finished?”

“Not by a long shot.” He glanced down at her plate, then started chewing slower. “So, what’s in the box you were in such a hurry to move?”

She shrugged and feigned nonchalance. “Nothing.”

“You sure? ‘Cause you seem pretty protective of it. Does it have all your naughty girl lingerie in it?”

“You wish.” Jane got up and took her plate around to the sink and suddenly wished she had some naughty girl lingerie. Damn man put all sorts of impractical ideas in her head. She wanted another piece of pizza, but…oh what the hell. She picked up another piece and ate it at a slower pace, savoring the deliciousness.

“Yes, I do wish. Very much so. If it’s not naughty nighties, then what’s in it?”

“Nothing I want to talk about.”

He regarded her silently for a minute that almost had her squirming before nodding his head. “Okay. I won’t ask again.”

“Good.”

“At least not tonight. I’ve got other plans.”

The last was said as he reached over and wiped the tomato sauce from the side of her mouth. She was so tempted to lick it off his finger, but bit her tongue holding back a groan while watching him do it instead. “I’ve got other plans as well. So, thank you for dinner, but it’s time for you to go. Again. For good this time. No coming back tomorrow night with dessert.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that.” He got up as well and followed her, but when she went to open the door for him, he kept going into the living area, his boots echoing on the wood floors. “What are you doing?” Then her gaze lowered to his ass in those denims and every nerve in her body came alive. It had to be illegal to look that hot.

As she stood there, resolved to usher him out despite his effect on her, he proceeded to move the box from her chair and take a seat.

“Why are you sitting down? I said you should leave.”
