Snippet Saturday – Warm Places

It’s February 4th. Winter. And today’s Snippet Saturday topic is about warmth. Much as I sometimes wish I could say yes, I’ll take that, the truth is, I’d rather cool and mild. I am not a warm weather person. Odd, right? I prefer the mountains over the beach. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I grew up in Florida, heat and humidity for almost all 365 days a year. The cool days, well, there were maybe 21 of them in a 12 month period…grins.

So, today’s snippet is taken from Twisted Up. It takes place in late Spring. Flowers are in bloom and Texas is getting hot… In more ways than one.

The late afternoon sun beat on his shoulders. The one fence post had been repaired, the horses brushed, the few cows that had wandered over to his side of the land herded back to his parents’ side and the stable door fixed. He was worn out, but damn, at the same time, he’d never felt more alive and full of energy. He’d done more today than he’d intended to do, including changing out the spark plugs and oil filter on the old Ford pickup they used specifically for ranch work. His brother was finishing up college at Tech but was around as much as he could to help.

Justin was grateful for it too. His brother helping out allowed Justin the chance to take off and kidnap Ella. He laughed. Kidnap. He didn’t exactly take her against her will. He’d just made it impossible for her to refuse. He simply put something she wanted in front of her and in a roundabout way, dared her to say no.

His brother had come for a long weekend and watched over Justin’s horses and worked around the place a little while Justin went to Alabama. He couldn’t begin to describe the feeling he’d had when he woke up at the ass crack of dawn and she was there, in his bed, snoring soundly. He loved her and he wanted her with him, in bed and out. He just had to get inside her walls and figure out what she was running from or trying to protect herself against.

Slipping his hat off his head, he wiped at the sweat on his brow with the back of his arm. Summer was coming hard and fast, and the heat felt as if it were going to be worse than last year. Though it seemed every summer got hotter and hotter and every winter colder and colder.

The back door to the house slammed shut, and he turned his head. Ella. Justin grinned and stared. She set a picnic basket down at the edge of the steps and then made her way toward him, carrying a large, handled thermos. He’d loaned her a T-shirt that stretched tight across her breasts and hips. She still wore the same brown pants she’d had on earlier that morning when he’d been unable to keep himself from bending her over.

“We definitely need to get you some boots,” he said for the second time that day. She stepped up to him and handed him the red drink cooler. He flipped the pour-spout lid and tilted his head back, only to lower it again. “This water?”

“Good.” He tilted his head back again and lifted the water jug up and poured. The icy liquid slid over his face and down his neck, his shoulders, his back and his chest. He stood there for a few seconds, reveling in the coolness under the sun. He slowly lowered the thermos back to his side. “Move away.”

He waited and hoped she’d done as he said before he lowered his head and shook it, slinging water in every direction. Running his hands through his hair, slicking it back off his forehead, he opened his eyes to see her staring at him as if he were going to be her next meal. She licked her lips, and he wasn’t even sure she realized she’d done it as she then lifted her thumb to her mouth and slid the tip between her teeth.

“Stop looking at me like that.”

“Can’t,” she mumbled around the digit she was nibbling on.

“Why?” He didn’t mind. He liked that she found him sexy, that she liked looking at him because he damn sure liked looking at her. Curves and valleys and strength and those green eyes that had haunted his dreams for months and that often had him waking up with his dick in his hand, stroking come up through the shaft.

“Don’t know really. You’re just… I can’t stop.”

“Well, try.” Sternness with her was always going to be a problem. He might like to think he could be stern and firm with her, but he knew he wasn’t fooling anyone, especially himself. She had him and his cock wrapped around her pretty little fingers. He could give it the old college try though. “Dirty as I am, I’m not aimin’ to roll around in the mud with you. So, wipe that look off your face.”

She raked him one more time with her gaze, starting at his feet and slowly moving up his legs, stopping at the juncture of his thighs. The longer she stared, the harder he got. He was going to find himself rolling around in the mud with her if she didn’t knock off that lusting perusal.

“Ella, I said cut it out. I ain’t a piece of meat.” He tried for affronted, offended, something to get her to look up in his face instead of at the tented denim. He didn’t pull it off.

She smiled slow and sure. “Yeah, you are.”

One rope. Three days. And two hearts on the line.

Justin has had enough. Ella, the woman who healed his broken heart, has been cancelling on him for two months straight. Sure, she’s busy with her job, which has her traveling far and wide. But that never stopped her from sharing nights of trivia, long conversations and blazing hot sex—until now. Truth to tell, he misses their easy friendship, the way her sighs fill his ear as he fills her body.

What he can’t figure out is, what’s changed?

At work, Ella finds it easy to talk to rooms full of strangers. Once back at her lonely apartment, though, she’s back to her painfully shy self—until Justin. Their chance meeting grew over the months into a year-long affair, but she can’t shake the feeling that rejection and pain are just around the corner. Best thing to do? End it now, before their intimacy digs too deep.

Suddenly he’s at her door with a length of neon-green rope and a naughty proposition, daring her to say no. Just how good could it be? There’s only one way to find out…

Warning: The sheets are tangled, the hat is crumpled, and the jeans are worn low on the hips. The cowboy is hot, determined, and helpless in the face of bunny slippers. Readers may need extra batteries to get this one out of their system.

You should definitely get a copy for yourself and well, ’tis the season of giving so you should gift a copy to a friend! 😉

Come January, I’ll be doing my own giveaways…

Some new things in the world of Lissa Matthews…

Where to begin? Let me see…

Okay, well… You saw that I’ve gotten back into Snippet Saturday. So be sure to tune in for that each week.

I have over on the sidebar of the blog and on the sidebar of the home page a Newsletter sign-up box! Every so often I get an email or message about a newsletter and how I need one, how someone wishes I had one, etc… Well, I listened, reluctantly. I never thought to have a newsletter but we’re going to. We’re all in this together. If I’m kicking and screaming about it, you’re coming along too! Sign up and I’ll be getting the first issue ready to go in January.

I have a new Facebook Author Page. I need you to go LIKE it! Pretty, pretty, pretty please? Again, never thought to have one, but it’s there. It has the yummy-ass cover of Twisted Up on it! If for no other reason you go to like it, that male torso and hand holding the rope ought to be enough. Here’s the URL:

This is release month… There are a lot of things happening. I will be guest blogging all over the place starting December 14th on Delilah Devlin’s blog. This is information that will likely be up on the Facebook Author Page as well, where I’m going to be guesting, giving away, etc…

I’ve joined with some authors in the second book of a charity project: Authors Helping Harry… raising funds for cancer research. You can read about Harry, here! I was thrilled to be able to participate in this, which was arranged by author Karin Tabke’s assistant.

You can find the first book on Amazon: Author Moments… All proceeds go to help fund cancer research. There are amazing authors in this… Shayla Black, Melissa Schroeder, Kris Cook, Virna DePaul, Sophie Oak, Karin Tabke, Eliza Gayle, Elizabeth Silver and many more…

The second book, Author Moments II isn’t out yet, but I’ll let you know when it is. The awesome Kendra Egert created the cover for it:

Please visit the Facebook page for Authors Helping Harry as well as the blog!

I believe that’s all I have right now for y’all. I’ve hired an assistant. She will be helping me, or rather forcing me to give up control of my calendar and a few other things so I can get onto and into the business of writing. Her name is Brandy and she’s going to be an awesome change for me. Y’all want books. I want to write books. The business end of this business is time consuming and she’s going to help me with that along with regular blog content, cover thoughts, etc… I’m gonna have a well-oiled or at least a well disciplined machine here if it kills me!

Y’all, my readers, are awesome! Have a great day!
